Sony in Advanced Talks to Acquire Kadokawa, FromSoftware's Parent Company
Sony is in advanced negotiations to acquire Kadokawa, FromSoftware's parent company, with a potential deal valued at approximately $2.7 billion—less than Sony's Bungie acquisition in 2022.

The acquisition would give Sony significant control over FromSoftware, the acclaimed developer of Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne. Currently, Kadokawa owns 70% of FromSoftware, while Sony already holds 14%, and Tencent owns the remaining stake.
FromSoftware, under Hidetaka Miyazaki's leadership, has become one of gaming's most influential studios, pioneering the Soulslike genre and releasing multiple critically acclaimed titles. Their latest hit, Elden Ring, has sold 25 million copies.
While Sony has previously published FromSoftware exclusives like Demon's Souls and Bloodborne, the acquisition may not necessarily lead to PlayStation exclusivity for future titles, as demonstrated by Sony's handling of Bungie's multiplatform approach.
Beyond gaming, the acquisition appears strategically focused on Kadokawa's extensive anime and manga operations. As a major publisher of properties like Re:Zero and Delicious in Dungeon, Kadokawa would complement Sony's existing anime presence through Crunchyroll, which they acquired in 2021.
The deal, expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, would represent a significant consolidation in both the gaming and anime industries, with FromSoftware's acquisition being a valuable addition to Sony's growing entertainment portfolio.
