Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest is being extended through mid-season due to overwhelming player interest, as announced by game director Aaron Keller. The current test features the traditional 2-2-2 role queue format, which will later transition to 6v6 open queue.

The extension comes amid growing competition from Marvel Rivals, which also features 6v6 gameplay with open queue. This move appears to be resonating strongly with longtime Overwatch players who originally fell in love with the 6v6 format in the first game.
The return to 6v6 addresses several issues players have experienced with the 5v5 format:
- Tank balance difficulties in 5v5
- Limited effectiveness of off-tank roles
- Reduced strategic depth with single-tank compositions
- Challenges in balancing tank survivability
