Overwatch 2 Director: Game Needs Evolution, Changes Coming From Dev Team's Drive
Overwatch 2's game director Aaron Keller has acknowledged that the game "hasn't evolved as much as it should have" and revealed ambitious plans for 2025 to address player concerns and compete in the current gaming landscape.
Key changes coming to Overwatch 2 in 2025:
- Hero Perks: Mid-match upgrades that will add new strategic depth
- Stadium Mode: A new third-person gameplay experience
- New Heroes: Additional characters joining the roster
- Hero Bans: Implementation in Competitive Play
- Various gameplay improvements and content updates

"There is pressure on the Overwatch team, and a lot of it is internal," Keller explained in a GamesRadar interview. The team aims to inject "freshness" into the experience while maintaining the game's core appeal.

The development team acknowledges the risks associated with these changes but believes they're necessary, especially given new competition from games like Marvel Rivals. Keller emphasized that these updates represent the team "not playing it safe" anymore.
These changes come in response to player feedback and internal recognition that the game needs significant evolution. Season 15 will introduce Perks, while Season 16 brings both a new hero and the Stadium mode.
"At the end of the day, I think players want us to be taking risks," Keller stated, while assuring that these changes will be implemented responsibly to maintain game balance and quality.
