Marathon players won't need a PlayStation Network account to play the game on Xbox or PC platforms, Bungie confirmed via the game's official Discord channel. This announcement addresses concerns following the recent Helldivers 2 situation, where Sony initially required Steam players to link PlayStation Network accounts.

The clarification comes ahead of Marathon's gameplay reveal scheduled for April 12. While Bungie is now owned by Sony, the developer is ensuring platform-specific restrictions won't affect players' access to the game.

This decision appears to be influenced by the Helldivers 2 controversy, where Sony attempted to implement mandatory PlayStation Network account linking for Steam players three months after launch. After significant player backlash, particularly from regions without PlayStation Network access, Sony reversed this requirement within three days.

The announcement received positive reactions from the Marathon community, with players expressing relief and increased excitement for the game. While a release date hasn't been announced yet, more information is expected during the upcoming Saturday stream.

This player-friendly approach demonstrates Bungie's commitment to accessibility across different gaming platforms, ensuring a smoother launch without unnecessary account requirements or platform restrictions.

Note that Bungie is under Sony's ownership but maintains independence in this aspect of game deployment, differentiating Marathon's approach from previous cross-platform releases under the PlayStation umbrella.
